At the beginning and end Manchester United were a mess â€“ but the result was determined mostly by what happened in between, as a pair of predatory goals from Anthony Martial, one from Juan Mata and several fine saves by David de Gea earned a victory that sent Louis van Gaalâ€™s side up to second in the Premier League table.
